National Service Scheme (NSS):

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year, 1969. Aimed at developing student’s personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges, Universities and at +2 level working for a campus-community linkage. The cardinal principle of the NSS programme is that it is organized by the students themselves, and both students and teachers through their combined participation in community service, get a sense of involvement in the tasks of nation building.

Motto of NSS:

The Motto of NSS “Not Me But You”, reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the students develop appreciation to other person’s point of view and also show consideration to other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is well doctrined in this motto, which underlines on the belief that the welfare .of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society on the whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.

Aims & Objectives of NSS:

  1. To understand the community in which they work;
  2. To understand themselves in relation to their community;
  3. To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process;
  4. To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
  5. To utilise their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems;
  6. To develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities:
  7. To gain skills in mobilising community participation;
  8. To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
  9. To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters;
  10. To practice national integration and social harmony.

Symbol of NSS:

The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa, India. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space, the symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change. The eight bars in the wheel represent the 24 hours of a day. The red colour indicates that the volunteer is full of young blood that is lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

Activities

Cleanliness drive was held at Tekkali Village on 04-03-2025, During this 25 students have actively participated and cleaned the roads, drainage of the village. Also at the end of the day, awareness on keeping the surroundings clean was given to the villagers. Tekkali village hosts 150 houses with a population of 2500. About 200 villagers have actively took part during the awareness program.

Health camp awareness was held at Gurajada School,Vizianagaram on 14-02-2025 through Health Care on Wheels vehicle. Total of 12 students have participated and screened 67 students.

As part of our NSS initiative and our ongoing efforts to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse, we had the privilege of inviting Sri SVVN Babji Rao Garu, Deputy Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise for VZM and PVP districts, and Sri Srinadhudu, District Prohibition & Superintendent, to address our students. We were also honored to have Circle Inspector Janardhana Rao Garu as a key participant in this awareness program.

An awareness session on road safety was conducted for the students of Centurion University AP by Mr. D. Mani Kumar, Deputy Transport Commissioner, and Mr. K. Ravi Shankar, Motor Vehicle Inspector. The session focused on reducing accidents and fatalities on the roads, educating students about safe driving practices, pedestrian safety, and appropriate behavior in various traffic situations. Key aspects covered included:

  1. Obeying Traffic Rules
  2. Use of Seatbelts and Helmets
  3. Avoiding Distractions While Driving
  4. Dangers of Drinking and Driving
  5. Pedestrian Safety Measures
  6. Defensive Driving Techniques
  7. Importance of Vehicle Maintenance
  8. Understanding the ‘Golden Hour’ After an Accident
  9. Types of Injuries During Accidents and the Roles of Neurosurgeons and Neurologists
  10. Social Responsibility in Achieving Zero Percent Accidents
