About the Programme
The Bachelor of Science in Optometry is a comprehensive five-year program dedicated to the study and practice of vision care. The course focuses on the examination, diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders related to the visual system. The academic curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, including general anatomy and physiology, ocular anatomy and physiology, medical procedures in optometry, low vision aids, geometrical optics, and nutrition. In addition to classroom learning, students must complete a one-year internship, which provides essential clinical exposure and practical experience in real-world optometric practice.
Throughout the program, students participate in extensive hands-on training and field visits, allowing them to develop practical skills and gain deeper insights into clinical procedures. The curriculum also emphasizes specialized areas such as contact lens fitting, pediatric optometry, and the diagnosis and management of binocular vision disorders. This integrated approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared to deliver high-quality eye care and contribute effectively to the improvement of patients’ visual health.
Scope of the Programme
The Bachelor of Science in Optometry programme offers graduates a wide range of career opportunities in the field of eye care and vision science. After completing the course, graduates can establish their own eye care clinics, optical outlets, or lens manufacturing units, allowing them to practice independently and provide professional vision care services. With the growing demand for qualified eye care professionals, optometry graduates can also secure rewarding positions in hospitals, eye clinics, and optical centres, where they may work in collaboration with ophthalmologists or practice independently in various clinical and retail optical environments.
Beyond clinical practice, graduates may explore opportunities in optical lens manufacturing, optical product development, and entrepreneurship within the optometry industry. The programme also provides a strong academic foundation for those interested in pursuing higher education such as Master’s and PhD programmes in optometry or related fields, which can lead to careers in teaching, research, and advanced clinical specialisation. With these diverse pathways, a B.Sc. in Optometry serves as a valuable qualification for building a successful career in the expanding field of eye care, both in India and internationally.
